Aristotle and Virtue

Do you think Aristotle is correct when he claims that a person must be virtuous in order to be happy? Why or why not?

  1. Aristotle is incorrect when he claims a person must be virtuous in order to be happy. A person's individual happiness is based off their individual view of happiness. No man, including Aristotle, can tell a person that the only way they can gain happiness is through a life of virtues. A man could live his entire life as a lawyer in South Carolina, while living a life not entirely based off virtues. If that man is happy in his individual way, then he is happy. No man has the right to tell another human that if they do not live a life of virtues, they will not be happy.

  4. Personally, I think Aristotle is incorrect because happiness itself is not always a good or virtuous thing. For example, even the vicious
people could achieve their own happiness by harming other people and animals rather than
performing virtuous actions. Therefore, if Aristotle argues that a person "must" be virtuous in order to be happy, I would say this idea is too strong and narrow.

  5. I believe that Aristotle was wrong when he said that you have to live a virtuous life to have a happy life. I think that if you are happy than you are happy. You do not need to have someone tell you how to be happy. I believe that you need virtue but when you know you're living a happy life you don't have to worry about others.

  6. I believe that aristolte veiws on happiness in incorrent. You achieve your happiness based on what you think happiness is. Your own happiness is up to you. It the same time living a virtuous life could be your way of achieving happiness and it is a good we. But when it comes down the it Aristotle is wrong to say you have to live a virtuous life to achieve happiness.

  7. Everyone has a different perspective of what they think happiness is. You can be virtous to be happy but if you think you are legitmentally happy and you aren't virtous that's your decision as long as your happy

  8. I dont agree with Aristotle when he claims everyone needs to live a virtuous life to be happy. Everyone gets happiness from doing different things. Even the wierdest things can make people happy and these things can not be virtuous what so ever
