Reflection on the Quarter

Of all the theories/philosophies (Aristotle, Kant, Mill, rights theories, Christianity) we have studied thus far this quarter, which do you find most appealing and why? Which do you find least appealing and why?

  1. I find Christianity the most appealing because it is very simple and straight forward. You don't need to go into much detail when you do things and theere are not many confusing rules or descriptions behind it. Christianity has the best ethics and morals behind leading a rightful and righteous life.

  2. I find Christianity the most appealing. It is the most appealing because I am a Christian. Also it is the one that makes the most sense. Kant's is the least appealing because it is nearly impossible to be moral. You have to do the act for the sake of being moral. To do that so many acts would go undone because you would spend so much time thinking about your reasons

  3. I think that Aristotle's theory is most appealing because i believe you need to live a virtuous life to attain happiness.I find Mill's least appealing because of how he states that good consequences means it was a good moral action and that bad consequences means it was a bad moral action.

  4. The things that i found most appealing this quarter were the different theory of rights. The things that i found least appealing were the philosophies if Aristotle and Kant. The reason why I disliked learning the philosophers of Kant and Aristotle because there were to many aspects involved in Christianity. I also didn't agree with the aspects that Kant believed in because he disagrees that the purpose of our lives is to achieve happiness, and that he believed that the pursuit to of a happy life was distinct from and opposed to a moral life. The reason i found the theory of rights so appealing is because it offered many different views about one essential aspect.

  5. I find Christianity the most appealing to me because it tells you that the two most important rules are love God and love your neighbor. you do these simple things then you can in fact live the virtuous life that one is trying to achieve. now there are others that would think oh its easiest to do what makes you happy. but really you need to keep everything in a checks and balance system which then makes happiness almost unachievable. the other moral theories that are there also leave on to start having God be less part of what you believe in. if you don't think that there is an afterlife and there is a person to judge you, but if there isn't one there and you do follow the other rules. oh yeah everything is fine, but studies have shown that if you do in fact follow the teachings of Christ and live the way he tells you you should then you will most of the time live longer, plus on the day of judgment when you are face to face with the creator, what will he have to say to you if your life hasn't been as morally right as you should have been by following the teachings and guidelines that he himself handed to us, then your only hurting yourself.

  6. I find Christianity the most appealing to me. It is most appealing because I am a Christian. I have learned about Christianity my whole life and know the most about it. Kant's is the least appealing to me. It is nearly impossible to follow this and be moral in every thing you do. There are many actions that you make throughout the day that Kant would disagree with. Christianity is by far the simpilest one to follow.

  7. I find Christianity the most appealing to me. Christianity, has been around me since i was little, and being able to get a better look on their views of abortion, happiness was great. Aristotle, as a philosopher, is very much in tune with Christianity when it comes to the belief of having happiness as a main goal. Both also believe that in order to achieve that happiness you must live a virtous life. Both Kant and Mill I felt as though their theories were flawed in tha Mill felt as though a action is only morally good if it has good consequences, and its bad action if the consequences are bad. I feel that is not true at all. With Kant feeling that there is not a place for consequences that arouse from a action is just not true in my eyes. Christianity I feel has theorys are more appealing to be. Christianity I feel as though is used as a example as how to live our lives. The bible is made up of stories that do represent the theories and point of view of the church, those parables hold a special message on how we should live our lives. Lastly, I feel as though Christianity is great and sometimes tough because faith that there is a heaven is sometimes difficult to believe and having to live perfect lives is not easy, but when we do perform good actions and morals it makes us feel good so why not believe in heaven and try to live the best life.

  8. To me i find that Christianity is the most appealing, in saying that i found it was easy to choose it because i have been a Christian/Catholic my whole life, i feel tat Christianity has shaped me into a forgiving, kind, and respectable person.
The most unappealing to me is Mills. I think that because to me every life is Sacred, and that when making a moral choice even if you pick something that brings more good than bad i still think it is wrong, and to think in Mills Utilitarianism way when saying it is not wrong at all i just cannot understand that

  9. I find that Mill's philosophy on Utilitarianism is most appealing to me because I believe that the true path to happiness is the choice that creates the greatest number of happiness for the greatest number of people. They way I see it, a person may do something that is morally right, but can create little or no happiness for everyone else, where as the reverse, an immoral decision that causes a greater number of happiness for others is a good thing. I do not agree with Aristotle’s principle that to achieve happiness is to live a virtuous life, because a criminal who kills people may be happy with their life, and a man who lives by the ten commandments may live the most miserable life on earth.

  10. I find mil's thoughts on Ultilitarianism most appealing beacause i believe if you do things for the greater good then you can get into heaven. The only thing i would change about it is the thought of killing a person or ruin their lives for the greater good. I find Aristotles thoughts on happiness unappealing because how does he know what happiness is for me.

  11. I found Christianity to be most appealing. I believe that Christianity is the most appealing because I have always been Christian, so I know about this the most. I found Mill to be the least appealing out of the choices. I found Mill the least appealing because every human life is not sacred. John Stewart Mill presented a more polished version of Utilitarianism.

  12. Through out all of all the theories and philosophies that we have studied so far this quarter I find Christianity most appealing. One of the main reasons is that I have grown up my whole life following it. I also find it appealing because it is a simple life if you follow the ten commandments and love all you can get a free pass to Heaven. The philosophies I find least appealing is Aristotle’s principle. He states that to achieve full happiness you have to live a virtuous life, and I believe that every person has there own veiw and way to find true happiness

  13. I find that Christianity is the most appealing theory that we have studied this quarter. I believe that you always need to make good moral decisions regardless of the consequences, and I also believe that happiness is not the only thing that matters in life. I also find John Locke's philosophy appealing. Locke states that all people have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of property. I agree with this because all people have the right to live and abortion is wrong and that you should live in a free country where no one person is under the control of another. Locke defines property as when a man puts forth his labor to the natural world and I believe that all people should be able to do this. I find Tom Regan's theory of rights the most unappealing. This is because he does not believe rights are God given. I also disagree with him when he says that animals have rights.

  14. I find almost all of the theories that we have studied in this quarter be be appealing in some way or another. Each of them pose easily agreable and understandable points. But the one that I find most appealing is Utilitanism. John Mill posed this theory whose greatest principle in a moral situation is a decison that is made should benefit the greatest number of people. I agree with this strongly, but I would also include my knoweldge and Christian beliefs to coincide with the theory of Utilitanism. Combining Utilitanism with Christinaity allows you to help the greatest number of people but also making sure that we are not purposely or conciensly inflicting pain or suffering on another group of people for our own benefits.

  15. The theory that I happen to find the most appealing is Christianity. It is the philosophy that I find the most comfortable, possibly because I grew up with learning their ethics. I find that most people would tend to agree with me. The teachers that I have been taught by have showed me that the main philosophy is Christianity and i tend to agree.

  16. I find Immanuel Kant's theory that the pursuit of a happy life was distinct from and oppoesed to a moral life. Because most people will be happy and wont live a moral life. I do not live a perfectly moral life but i am happy and on my way to achieve untimate happiness. I find Aristotle's theory that happiness is granted by only living a moraly and virtusly is not correct not everyone will live a moral life so they shouldnt be denied untimate happiness.
